They say that to become a world-class pro at anything, you have to put in at least 10,000 hours of practicing. For a DJ, this means playing out whenever, wherever, as much as you can. In other words:
Accept all the gigs that come your way – at least while you’re learning.
I get it; you consider yourself a trance DJ and can’t possibly see yourself DJing your friend’s birthday. But trust me, four hours of putting on Top 40 tracks for real people will teach you more about DJing than months of playing for yourself in your bedroom.
So just get out there and do it. Use every opportunity to get those 10,000 hours under your belt.
Have you played a gig outside of your “normal” genre? How did you handle it? Share your story in the comment section below!
JM has played open-air gigs, shared the stage with the likes of ATB and had mix albums released commercially. He has been teaching DJing since 2008.
